IT'S HAPPENING!
It's kinda like watching a super tanker turning. At first, you aren't sure that anything is happening -- it's barely turning. Then, you think to yourself, "Yep, that sucker's turning!"
A day after the shootings in the Virginia Tech "Gun Free Killing Zone," I wrote that the political landscape is much different today than it was a decade ago. Back then, there would have been immediate calls for even more repressive gun control laws. Today, we have seen a smattering of those calls from the usual suspects -- the same anti-rights politicians who always are quick to call for more restrictions on the law-abiding people, in the silly hope that this will make murderers change their ways.
The huge difference, this time, though, is that we are seeing my "War On Gun Free Killing Zones" being picked up all over the country. People are writing letters to the editor, pointing out the criminals (especially those who plan murder and their own suicide) don't care a whit about a sign proclaiming a campus, store or public building to be "gun free." No gun control law in the world will stop that person, but a good person with a gun can. That's what has happened many times -- good people with guns save lives. Note, please, that I'm not saying that ending "gun free killing zones" will deter criminals. I don't know that it will. I do say that people will have a chance to protect themselves and others if they can legally carry guns in those places.
To put a fine point on it, I don't know if the shooter at Virginia Tech could have been deterred, but if someone in that dorm had been trained and licensed to carry a handgun, perhaps the body count could have been something short of 32.
