Gun Talk Staff
The Surface to Air is a lightweight, portable clay thrower that weighs in at 10 pounds, comes with a carrying case that doubles as a stand, and connects to a smartphone app that gives you control over nearly every aspect of how it throws. Oscillation, wobble, speed, timing, singles, doubles — all of it is adjustable, and all of it can be randomized so you're never shooting the same target twice.
The biodegradable, plant-based targets Caldwell developed for the Claycopter system fly up to 100 yards and have a life-like flight pattern that responds to wind the way actual birds do. That erratic, unpredictable flight is a significant part of what makes the Surface to Air more effective as a training tool than a traditional static clay thrower — you're not developing a groove, you're developing genuine shooting skills.
The Caldwell Clays app is where the Surface to Air really separates itself from anything else on the market. You can connect up to 10 throwers to a single app, which means you can set up multiple throwing stations and control all of them from one device. Your buddy can run the app while you shoot, throwing targets from different stations in whatever sequence they choose. You never see the same target twice, and you never know exactly what's coming.
One of the more creative features is the ability to take a photo of your shooting area and then touch specific spots on the image to direct where the target gets thrown. It's an intuitive way to create variety without needing to manually adjust the thrower every time you want to change things up.
For solo shooters, the voice activation feature is the answer to the obvious question of how you throw targets when nobody else is around. Say “launch” and the thrower goes. No remotes to fumble with, no awkward setups — just you, the gun, and targets going whenever you call for them.
Ryan demonstrated the Surface to Air on camera with multiple configurations — singles, doubles, and the flurry setting — and the results were exactly what you'd hope for. The targets flew unpredictably, the app responded instantly, and the whole experience looked genuinely fun rather than like a product demonstration.
The report pair feature got specific attention — the thrower listens for the sound of a gunshot and sends the second clay based on that audio cue. It's a clever implementation that makes the system feel responsive in a way that traditional electronic throwers simply aren't.
It's clear, it's small, it's light, and it listens — the report pair feature alone makes the Surface to Air feel like nothing else on the market.
The Caldwell Claycopter Surface to Air is one of those products that's easy to be skeptical about until you actually see it in action. The app integration, the voice activation, the multiple thrower connectivity — all of it sounds like feature bloat until you realize that every one of those features makes the shooting experience genuinely better.
If you've been shooting the same static clay presentations for years and want something that actually challenges you the way hunting or competition does, the Surface to Air is worth every penny.
